There are several types of radiator hose, depending on which hose needs replacing and which type of radiator hose that your particular radiator requires, the replacement time and cost may vary. Sometimes the replacement required is not of the hose but of the coolant hose joiner, especially with a flexible radiator hose if the clamp is not tight enough.
Radiator Hose Replacement
What sort of radiator hose do I have?
Each type of hose can have different widths – depending on the vehicle you may have a 1 inch radiator hose or a 3 inch radiator hose! Sometimes these require a radiator hose reducer or special radiator hose clamps. Whether you have a flex radiator hose, a silicone radiator hose, or a braided radiator hose their integrity is of the highest importance as the correct functioning of the radiator relies on the fluid passing easily and freely without leaks through the system.
Can you replace an upper radiator hose without draining the radiator?
Yes, but it might be messy. You do not need to drain the whole radiator, only so that the level of fluid is below the level of the upper radiator hose so that the hose is empty. The radiator fluid can then be topped up.
Can you replace a lower radiator hose without draining the radiator?
No. In order to remove this hose the whole radiator must be completely drained in a safe manner – radiator fluid can be extremely hot and under pressure for quite some time after the engine has been shut down.
